Thera-Fitness was created in 1993 by C. Vicki Gold, PT, MA as a functional conditioning program to serve individuals who were medically or physically challenged. Vicki’s expertise in neurophysiologic approaches to therapeutic exercise, combined with her interest in mind-body approaches to fitness and well-being, made her uniquely qualified to create and lead this type of specialized program.
Originally incorporated in 1995, today Thera-Fitness, Inc. serves both professionals and non-professionals in a variety of healthcare and non-healthcare settings. We offer presentations and workshops that incorporate knowledge and skills from physical therapy, biomechanics, ergonomics and select mind-body techniques.
In addition to programs and trainings, Thera-Fitness, Inc. offers products that complement our services. Ms. Gold is a multi-talented, highly experienced physical therapist and passionate presenter and educator. She is a graduate of Hunter College, where she majored in physiology, psychology and kinesiology. Her physical therapy training was completed at New York University, where she went on to PhD studies in bio-mechanics and ergonomics.
Ms. Gold is a former Director of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at LaGuardia Community College. She has been on the faculties of several academic Physical Therapy programs, including New York University, Hunter College (NYC) and California State University in Fresno, California.
Ms. Gold’s clinical and teaching experience has taken her across the United States and into Brazil, SA, where she supervised and taught at the world-renown Associação de Assitência a Criança Defeituosa (AACD). Additionally, she has worked at New York’s prestigious “Rusk Institute,” Sloan-Kettering Memorial Hospital and at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. It is there that her back-injury prevention workshop became required for all employees - and “The ABCs of Prevention and Fitness” was born.
Ms. Gold is especially proud of the specialized trainings she has had over the years. Among the most notable are the 6-month residency with Ms. Margaret Knott, PT, founder, with Dr. Herman Kabat of Proprioceptive-Neuromuscular-Facilitation (PNF) and a 2-month training with Berta Bobath, creator of what has become Neuro-Developmental-Technique (NDT).
She has also studied osteoporosis prevention and management with Ms. Sara Meeks, PT, basic ergonomics with Mr. Ron Porter, PT, CEAS III through the Back School of Atlanta and joint mobilization techniques with both Dr. Stanley Paris, PT, PhD and Mr. Robin McKenzie – among others.
Ms. Gold’s very eclectic background has included extensive study of select mind-body techniques. Among these are: Yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates, Alexander and Feldenkrais techniques. Additional trainings include courses in “personal transformation” and cognitive behavioral approaches to well-being, which feature broadly in her signature creation, “The ABCs of Prevention and Fitness – At Home and On-the-Job.“ Click here to learn more.
